A River Called Home by Jess Wiegandt (26:47)

The 2023 National Paddling Film festival was proud to host the worldwide premiere of “A River Called Home”; a short documentary following the journey of four women who paddle the James River in Virginia from its headwaters to the Chesapeake Bay.

Known as America’s Founding River, the James River holds a lot of our nation’s history along its riverbanks, including being home to Jamestown and Richmond. It is also the largest watershed in Virginia, with 3 million people relying on it for drinking water, commerce, and recreation. However, it is a river that faces challenges, with elevated levels of PCBs in the upper watershed, the threat of a gold mine in the middle James, and a sewage system in the lower region that results in raw overflow when rain overwhelms treatment plants.

In a 21-day expedition, these women study water quality, working with local students, to better connect with their watershed and learn how every person can become an advocate for their local rivers.

After our crew of four spent 3 weeks exploring the rivers on the East Coast of Madagascar, Cody and Louis flew home and left Cole Moore and myself to do some more paddling. We set our sights on the First Descent of the Nosivolo. The access was in question but Cole and I got lucky and found a guide via the help of our driver to help us navigate the fifteen miles of forking jungle paths until we reached the river. 120 miles and 6 days later, Cole and I both agreed that it was likely the best river either of us had ever done. Following this we made a quick trip to checkout the classic Ikopa river. Madagascar is a dream kayak destination with excellent weather, friendly locals, and phenomenal whitewater.

‘Am I an adventurer yet?’ Kayaking and Hiking in Scotland by Mark Agnew (35:16)

The plan was simple - kayak along the West Coast of Scotland and climb Munros from sea level. But there was a more abstract goal too. Mark Agnew grew up admiring Britain's many adventurers and explorers. He wanted to be like them. Having just become a father, this felt like his last opportunity to fulfill that childhood dream and become an adventurer. Mark set off on a two week adventure by kayak in Scotland. His desperate attempt to become an adventurer was filled with comical lows. He lost vital gear and was forced to adapt. The RNLI and a Coast Guard helicopter were summoned for aid. He had to adjust his plans when his kayaking partner left him alone with two kayaks in a remote village. But it was worth it for the highs, the views, the shared experiences and the wildlife. When the final day arrives, Mark is left to ponder "Am I an adventurer yet?"

From there we make our way down a small unnamed river which we nickname "La Petite Rivière". This little river flows into the Saint-Jean River, which in turn flows into the Gulf of St.Lawrence. We also make a small detour one afternoon to explore the Poisset River, another tributary of the Saint-Jean. Along the way we run some rapids, we portage some rapids and we catch lots of trout. The old footage at the start of the video was contributed by Guy Doré, who canoed down the Saint-Jean River in 1983.
