“A Baffin Vacation” 2023 NPFF Winner Professional

Erik Boomer and Sarah McNair-Landry set off on a bold multi-sport 45 day expedition traveling through the remote landscape of Baffin Island in search of stunning cliffs to climb and unexplored rivers to whitewater kayak.

Sarah McNair-Landry | Nunavut, Canada

“La Petite Riviere” 2023 NPFF Winner Amateur

Join us on a 9 day whitewater kayaking expedition in Minganie (Quebec, CANADA). We begin by flying north, deep into the boreal forest, landing on a small unnamed lake. From there we make our way down a small unnamed river which we nickname "La Petite Rivière". This little river flows into the Saint-Jean River, which in turn flows into the Gulf of St.Lawrence. We also make a small detour one afternoon to explore the Poisset River, another tributary of the Saint-Jean. Along the way we run some rapids, we portage some rapids and we catch lots of trout. The old footage at the start of the video was contributed by Guy Doré, who canoed down the Saint-Jean River in 1983.

Adam Gendron-Mitchell | Lachute, QC

“The Red Creek Sessions” 2023 NPFF Winner Accomplished

Red Creek is the elusive Class V+ whitewater gem flowing from the Dolly Sods Wilderness in the West Virginia highlands. Join Dr. Philip Prince Ph.D. as he takes an in depth look at the geology of this region through the descent of Red Creek by a group of local whitewater kayakers on Cheatfest Weekend 2022. And then stick around for a trip down the entire Cheat Watershed as we highlight everything this iconic river has to offer. Enjoy the ride!

Brooke Hess, 2023 Guest Host

Brooke Hess is a freestyle kayaker and science writer with a passion for river conservation. Growing up in Missoula, MT, she honed her freestyle skills on the Clark Fork and Lochsa Rivers before competing internationally as a member of the U.S. Freestyle Kayak Team.

Combining her academic pursuits with her paddling pursuits, she spent the past year planning and executing The Grand Salmon Source To Sea expedition, in which a team of women skied, whitewater kayaked, and sea kayaked over 1,000 miles from the source of the Salmon River to the Pacific Ocean, following the natural migration of anadromous fish. The team did this as a conservation project promoting the removal of the four lower Snake River dams and a moratorium on the Stibnite Gold Project, in order to save Idaho's rapidly dwindling salmon populations from extinction.

We can’t wait to welcome Brooke to the Bluegrass! She’ll be joining us in Frankfort, KY on Feb. 18 to share her stoke about freestyle, science, and her team’s epic source to sea!

Featuring film maker, Jess Wiegandt

Jess Wiegandt grew up paddling, as both of her parents are paddlesports instructors. Her childhood was spent outside, learning about river ecology and wildlife. Jess attended Brevard College and received a BA in Wilderness Leadership and Experiential Education (WLEE) and a BA in English with a concentration in Journalism.

Driven to tell stories of impact, she is now an award-winning filmmaker pursuing her MFA in Environmental and Social Impact Filmmaking at American University.

Her projects often focus on the health of rivers, and she recently completed a project aired on PBS on the Patuxent River. She is excited to continue working on stories that engage a wider audience with their watershed and local ecosystem. More about Jess and her work can be found at jesswiegandt.com.

Jess will be joining NPFF 2023 to share her experience as a whitewater kayaker & filmmaker, as well as premiering her new film, A River Called Home:

“A River Called Home” is a short documentary following the journey of four women who paddle the James River in Virginia from its headwaters to the Chesapeake Bay. Known as America’s Founding River, the James River holds a lot of our nation’s history along its riverbanks, including being home to Jamestown and Richmond. It is also the largest watershed in Virginia, with 3 million people relying on it for drinking water, commerce, and recreation.

However, it is a river that faces challenges, with elevated levels of PCBs in the upper watershed, the threat of a gold mine in the middle James, and a sewage system in the lower region that results in raw overflow when rain overwhelms treatment plants.

In a 21-day expedition, these women study water quality, working with local students, to better connect with their watershed and learn how every person can become an advocate for their local rivers. Learn more about the journey, how to support the film, and expected distribution at jesswiegandt.com/arch.
