Road to 100 by NRS (09:22)

The South Ram River, near the small town of Nordegg, Alberta, stands out to a select group of kayakers because of a beautiful series of waterfalls spread throughout its canyon walls. The tallest waterfall on the river, Ram Falls, cascades nearly 100 feet to a pool below. For years, paddlers have visited the South Ram River to run the Class 5 canyon, but always opt to enjoy the view of Ram safely from the riverbanks. Three kayakers logged the first descent of Ram in 2012. Six years later, extremely low water levels forced Edward Muggridge to abandon his first attempt at Ram Falls. He all but gave up his dream to run this hundred-footer. Liam Fournier followed Edward Muggridge's journey to paddle 100-foot Ram Falls. Mentored by world-class kayaker, Aniol Serrasolses, Road to 100 takes us deeper into the attempts and the failures, the anxieties and the skills involved in successfully running massive waterfalls.

Over a 14 day river trip they battle more than 80 powerful rapids, screaming directions to Lonnie the whole way. Always looming downstream roars Lava Falls, the largest rapid of them all. Throughout the journey they remember their past experiences and learn that negotiating the rapids of life is as simple as forming a team, kicking out in the current, and finding a line through the chaos.

Since then I have been back to the river whenever I could with even booking an overnight trip on the Gauley River in West Virginia with Adventures on the Gorge. I have even joined some local Facebook groups and plan on attending roll classes to prepare for next summer.

My Home Run: Chris Koll x Moose River by Eric Adsit (02:26)

The Moose River represents a unique part of whitewater history: negotiating dam release schedules to ensure recreational boating opportunities. Local paddler, Chris Koll was an important advocate in the fight to establish 20 release days a year on the Bottom Moose, something that had never been done in the history of U.S. river conservation. “The Moose is an interesting river. You have in about a 20-mile stretch pieces of river that are appropriate for almost every ability level.” At nearly 70 years old, Chris still loves the challenge of big drops and technical creeks, but convenience, fun, and good company have become equally important over the years. “At the Moose, you show up, you hang out, you get on the river, you get off and a half-hour later you’re in Old Forge on a comfortable bar stool ordering beef dip at Slickers.” This is Chris Koll and this is his Home Run.
